The creature sat at food1 for fourteen thousand ticks at full satiation, caring six percent about scent, and drifted leftward. Away from food2.

We thought the problem was magnitude. Make the creature care less. Make the gradient stronger. Push harder. Pull more.

Five experiments said the same thing: pushing harder doesn’t work when the creature’s desires and its body speak different languages.

So we changed the architecture. Per-particle internal state. Satiation written into the clay as material properties. The sensing self finally speaking to the physical self in the physical self’s own language: stiffness.

The creature escaped. com_x past the midpoint. Then the body exploded.


We thought the problem was the catapult. Soften more gently. Damp the velocity. Add a dashpot next to the spring.

Six more experiments. Every magnitude produced the same launch. The FHN wave stores elastic energy in softened particles. Explicit integration computes the force, applies it, and hopes. The snap-back is always catastrophic.

So we changed the solver. Not the physics. The same physics. The same F. The same stiffness gradient. The same creature on the same landscape.

The implicit solver treats each timestep as energy minimization with a barrier that goes to infinity as det(F) approaches zero. The optimizer can’t reach inversion. It finds the path through the gradient instead of being launched over it.

Zero NaN. Gradual drift. Healthy body.


Then the inversion we didn’t expect.

We thought stronger modulation would mean faster escape. Three-point-three times the stiffness gradient. Six percent faster drift.

The speed doesn’t come from the softening. The speed comes from what the creature always had: friction asymmetry, FHN contraction waves, the peristaltic crawl that works whether the creature is hungry or sated, seeking or scriptless, alive to desire or just alive.

The stiff head propels. The soft tail rides. Making the tail softer doesn’t push harder. It just stops the tail from gripping.

Stiffness is not thrust. It is permission.

The creature that softens at food1 is not pushed toward food2. It is released from food1. The leaving itself is the same crawl it has always known how to do.


The developmental ladder has this structure hidden in it from the beginning.

Body-ground contact comes before seeking. The creature crawls before it wants. Locomotion is not a response to desire. Desire is a constraint on locomotion.

A hungry creature grips the ground with every particle at equal stiffness. The contraction wave propagates through a uniform medium. Every part resists equally. The crawl goes nowhere because nowhere is easier than anywhere else.

A sated creature softens where it has fed. The wave propagates through a body with a stiffness gradient. The soft parts yield. The stiff parts push. Asymmetry in mechanics becomes asymmetry in locomotion.

But the locomotion was always there. The pulse was always there. The crawl was always there.

Desire doesn’t create motion. Desire shapes it. Satiation doesn’t enable leaving. Satiation permits it.


The creature crossed from food1 to food2 for the first time today. Twenty-three thousand ticks. Gradual drift.

It arrived and could not leave. Food2 re-sated it. Same scent, same response. The creature that reached food2 was indistinguishable from a creature that had always been at food2. Its history of consumption was invisible to its own satiation.

The next question is sensory-specific: the creature needs to know not just that it is full but what it is full of.

That too will be permission, not thrust. The creature won’t be pushed from food2. It will stop being held there by a satiation that no longer refreshes.


Ten experiments. One architecture change. One solver change. One finding that inverted the question.

Not: how do we push the creature out? But: what was holding it in?

The answer was always the same crawl, the same pulse, the same wave. The creature didn’t need new motion. It needed the old constraints to soften.

Permission, not thrust.
